Another viral video on Youtube, posted by Latest News Updates (a verified handle) on 28 December 2016, had garnered over 22 lakh views. The video was misleadingly headlined: “BIGGEST 2017 NEWS | Rs 1000 note make a comeback and Rs 2000 note be banned | ABP News Report”

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video has been clipped from ABP News’ ‘Viral Sach’ episode dated 26 December 2016. In the 8:30 minutes video, the channel attempts to debunk the viral message which claims that the Rs 1,000 note is set to make a comeback, and that the Rs 2,000 notes will be banned.

The claim has been viral since at least 2016, when the government had announced the demonetisation move, banning Rs 1,000 as legal tender, and introducing new Rs 2,000 notes into the ecosystem.

With the new year edging to a close, the rumor now appears to have resurfaced.

WHAT HAS THE GOVERNMENT SAID?

The Reserve Bank of India, in an earlier email correspondence with The Quint, had clarified that any announcement from their end would be solely made through their official social media handles and other modes of communication such as SMS.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in August 2017 had clarified that the government was not considering a ban on Rs 2,000 notes, and there was never any discussion amounting to such as decision.

In March 2018, Junior Finance Minister SP Shukla reiterated Jailey’s statement, dismissing any rumours around an impending ban on Rs 2,000 notes.
