  • The opposite side of the coin showed an illustration of Indian reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy along with text commemorating his 250th birth anniversary.

  • Those sharing noted that the coin was released to honour the reformer.

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

What we found: At first, we went through the official site of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and documents regarding Indian coins.

  • There was no evidence that the Indian government ever issuing a coin with a one-lakh rupee denomination.

  • As of August 2025, the largest denomination coin widely used in India is the ₹20 coin, which was launched in 2019.

  • However, the government formally recognised Raja Ram Mohan Roy on his 250th birth anniversary in 2023 by issuing a commemorative coin and a postal stamp.

  • The value of that official coin is ₹250, not ₹1,00,000, noted the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Literary Foundation (RRMRLF).

  • The Indian government also mints with the help of the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) to produce special commemorative coins to celebrate important events or pay tribute to notable individuals.

  • These are categorised as a collector's items only, indicating they are official yet created in restricted amounts and not meant for everyday use like ordinary currency.

Conclusion: The viral claim that the government issued a ₹1,00,000 coin to honour Raja Ram Mohan Roy is false. In 2023, the government released a commemorative coin worth ₹250 on the reformer's 250th birth anniversary.
