CLAIM
A viral video on social media claims that Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his mother Heeraben Modi recently. The video was shared on Friday, 24 May. The claim along with the viral video reads: ‘पीएम मोदी माँ से मिलने पहुंचे तो देखिये क्या हुआ वहां उनके साथ’’
(Translation: When PM Modi went to meet his mother, see what happened)
Namo Supporter’s Facebook page shared the viral video with a similar claim and received an engagement of 1,57,000 views and over 2,900 shares at the time this article was written.
Another Facebook page called ‘Indian Team Fans’ also shared the same video and received an engagement of over a lakh views and more than 900 shares.
TRUE OR FALSE?
While it’s true that Narendra Modi did meet his mother, but not recently. This is an old video and dates back to 2014.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT?
We did a frame-to-frame analysis using InVID, a video verification tool and then reverse-searched each frame on Yandex. This led us to a snapshot of the video on which Aaj Tak’s logo can be seen. The image is captioned as ‘Narendra Modi seeks blessings from his mother before leaving for Delhi.’
Then we searched for the video on YouTube by typing ‘aaj tak Narendra Modi seeks blessings from his mother before leaving for Delhi.’ This search showed a video shared by Aaj Tak channel on 22 May 2014.
A closer look at the video shows that the viral video is a flipped version of the original video.
Narendra Modi had visited his mother back on 22 May 2014 before leaving for New Delhi to be sworn in as the Prime Minister on 26 May 2014. The description of the Aaj Tak video reads: “It is not just to Gujarat that Narendra Modi is bidding adieu to, it is also to his family. Even as the state which has seen its halcyon days under Modi prepares for a period without him, Modi decided to pay a visit to his mother before he left for Delhi where he will soon be swearing his oath as the next Prime Minister of India. His mother, by way of a token of blessing, gave him Rs 101.”
