A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi embracing Russian President Vladimir Putin is going viral with a claim that it shows recent visuals from the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China.
What does the viral post say?: An X (formerly Twitter) user shared the clip saying, "PM Modi to Russian President Vladimir Putin: If there is anything for me, please let me know. #PMModiInChina."
What are the facts?: The video dates back to July 2024, when PM Modi was a on two-day visit to Russia. This makes the viral claim false.
How did we find that out?: A simple Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral video directed us to a similar visual published in a report published by Reuters.
The report was published on 9 July 2024.
The photo was captioned, "Russia's President Vladimir Putin bids farewell to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi following their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia July 9, 2024."
Other sources: We found more visuals available on the official website of Sputnik Media Bank that showed PM Modi shaking hands and then hugging the Russian President. All the images were taken on 9 July 2024.
Bloomberg News, too, shared the same visuals on their official YouTube channel on 11 July 2024.
The video was shared with a title that said, "Putin and Modi Embrace as Indian PM Ends Moscow Visit."
PM Modi's two-day visit to Russia: PM Modi had visited Russia in July 2024 to hold the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Putin.
On 9 July 2024, the Indian Prime Minister was officially conferred the 'Order of St Andrew the Apostle’ award by President Putin.
Conclusion: It is evident that the video is from Russia and not China as claimed by several users on the internet.
