Pak Journalist Shares Old Images as Current Unrest in J&K
Amid heightened tension and heavy deployment of troops across the Kashmir Valley, there is a plethora of fake misinformation which has been doing the rounds on the internet.
On Sunday, 4 August, Pakistan-based journalist Ameer Abbas shared a set of images and claimed that the Indian Army is killing ‘innocent and unarmed Kashmiris.’ The tweet had been retweeted 912 times and was liked by 1,900 people at the time this article was written.

OLD IMAGE OF PALESTINIAN VICTIM
Not only is the image old, but is from the 2014 Gaza war. The Quint had earlier reported that the same image was falsely attributed to Kashmir when Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi, in 2017 had cited the picture of the Palestinian victim as 'evidence of atrocities' on Kashmiris.
The photo is actually of 17-year-old Rawya abu Joma’a of Gaza, who was injured in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza strip in 2014. The photograph was captured by award-winning American photographer Heidi Levine in July 2014. The picture is available on multiple news websites.
The archived version of the tweet can be viewed here.
SECOND IMAGE IS ALSO OLD
We did a reverse image search on Google and found an opinion piece by Kashmir Global that was published in 2012.
While The Quint has not been able to independently verify the origin of the picture, but it’s certainly old and not from current chaos in Kashmir.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN KASHMIR?
Kashmir has been on the edge following the heavy deployment of additional troops and the state administration’s order asking the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims and the tourists to leave the valley owing to security reasons.
On Sunday night, former J&K chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah were placed under house arrest. Further, Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was imposed in Jammu from 6 am, on Monday, 5 August, till further orders, said Sushma Chauhan, District Magistrate, Jammu.
