A video of Wing Commander Vyomika Singh was played during the press conference shared on the official YouTube channel of Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on 11 May.

What was Singh heard saying?: The clip showed Singh purportedly accepting that Indian Air Force (IAF) stations at Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur and Bhuj sustained damages.

  • It also showed Singh allegedly saying that India had suffered damages at other military statements as well.

  • The wing commander was also heard saying that Pakistan targeted military infrastructure in India. Using these remarks as proof, Pakistan's Director General of ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif said that his country did not target any civilian infrastructure in India.

The three broad claims: The statements of Singh used in the Pakistani press conference largely tried to portray three narratives:

  • Pakistan did not target any civilian areas.

  • IAF stations at Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur, and Bhuj sustained damages.

  • India also sustained damages at other military stations in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri and Akhnoor sectors.

Are any of these claims true?: NO. Singh's video has been heavily edited to make it appear like she made such statements. The original clip did show Singh mentioning that Pakistan had indeed targeted civilian areas.

Did Pakistan not target civilian areas?: We went through the official website of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to find the transcript of the special briefing on Operation Sindoor that was delivered on 10 May.

  • Wing Commander Vyomika Singh was clearly heard saying that Pakistan had indeed targeted civilian areas and military infrastructure.

  • We found that the part where the Pakistani press conference clipped the part where Singh mentioned about civilian areas being targeted.

"Pakistani military continued with its provocations, carrying out aggressive actions employing multiple threat vectors all along the western border. Pakistan employed UCAV, drones, long-range weapons, loitering munitions and fighter aircrafts to target civilian areas and military infrastructure. Pakistan military also resorted to air intrusions using drones and firing of heavy calibre weapons along the Line of Control."

IAF stations sustained heavy damages?: Nowhere did Singh or Colonel Sofiya Qureshi accept or insinuate that IAF stations had sustained heavy damages due to Pakistani attacks.

  • Singh said, "Along the international border and the Line of Control, air intrusions and several harassment attacks were also attempted from Srinagar till Naliya at more than 26 locations."

"Indian Armed Forces successfully neutralised these threats and majority of the vectors. However, limited damage was sustained to equipment and personnel at Indian Air Force stations at Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur and Bhuj. There were also several high-speed missile attacks noticed subsequently after 0140 hours in the night at several air bases in Punjab."

Were other military stations damaged?: As one can imagine, these statements were not made in the press conference conducted by the MEA.

  • The clip that the Pakistani conference carried was stitched in such a manner to provide an illusion of Singh accepting heavy damages being sustained in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri and Akhnoor sectors.

  • In reality, she had said, "Along the Line of Control also, Pakistan has attempted multiple air intrusions using drones and conducted shelling using heavy-calibre RT guns, targeting civilian infrastructure and killing some civilians."

"Heavy exchange of artillery mortars and small-arm fire in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri and Akhnoor sectors continued. Indian Army has responded effectively and proportionately, causing extensive damage to Pakistan Army."

Pakistan's dependence on disinformation: Since the beginning of the Operation Sindoor, Pakistani-linked social media accounts and media have heavily peddled narratives to show themselves in a positive light.

  • The usage of Singh's altered video in their press conference was another such attempt.

  • Team WebQoof had recently analysed the kind of fake news that went viral during and after Operation Sindoor. You can read the story here.

Conclusion: Evidently, Pakistani's ISPR intentionally used an edited clip of Wing Commander Vyomika Singh to create positive narratives about their country.
