Old Video Shared as Jharkhand Lynching Victim’s Funeral Procession

The video is not of people carrying Jharkhand’s Tabrez Ansari’s body but Bihar’s sharp shooter Tabrez Alam’s body.

CLAIM

A viral video on social media was circulated with the claim that it was the funeral procession of 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari, who was was allegedly thrashed for hours on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle in Jharkhand and was seen in a purported video being forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram" and “Jai Hanuman.” The claim along with the video reads:

‘झारखण्ड में भगवा आतंकवाद का शिकार हुए तबरेज़ अंसारी की जनाज़ा को लेकर जाते हुए लोग। अल्लाह तबरेज़ अंसारी की मग़फ़िरत फरमाये। कब तक जनाजे ढोते रहोग अगर यही भीड़ कातिल को ढूंढ कर सजा दे तो कभी मोबलीचिग नहीं होगी न कोई निर्दोष मारा जायेगा’’

(Translated: A victim of saffron terror in Jharkhand, Tabrez Ansari’s body is being taken by people. May God forgive all his sins. Till when will you keep taking people’s bodies, if this crowd starts searching for the murderer and punishes him/her, then mob lynching will never happen and no innocent will be killed)

Several social media users have shared the video on Twitter and Facebook with a similar claim.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim around the video is false. The video is not the funeral procession of Jharkhand’s Tabrez Ansari but of Bihar’s sharp shooter Tabrez Alam.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

We did a frame-to-frame analysis using InVID, a video verification tool, and then reverse-searched each frame on Yandex. This led us to a YouTube link titled as ‘तबरेज के जनाजे में जुटी हजारों की भीड़ देखें’ (Translated: Watch thousands of people carrying Tabrez’s body)

The video was uploaded by ETV Bharat on 22 September 2018 and a watermark of EenaduIndia can be seen. It is same as the viral video.

An ETV reporter from Bihar bureau told The Quint that in this video people are carrying Bihar’s Tabrez Alam’s body.

“The video is from Jehanabad. In this video, people are taking sharp shooter Tabrez Alam’s body who was shot last year near the Kotwali police station in Patna.”

Further, an official of Jharkhand’s Saraikela police station told The Quint that Tabrez Ansari’s funeral was conducted on 22 June.

WHY WAS TABREZ ALAM SHOT?

Tabrez Alam was a former sharp shooter of politician Mohammad Shahabuddin. The Times of India reported that Tabrez was walking towards his SUV when two people on a bike fired four bullets at Tabrez. He was reportedly murdered over land dispute.
