CLAIM

A video which shows a bunch of people thrashing a man has gone viral on social media with a claim that a Hindu man is being “lynched” by Muslims in broad day light.

The text accompanying the video reads, “Is this not lynching? The one who was killed is Hindu and the perpetrator is a Muslim, perhaps that’s why people won’t call it lynching.”

(क्या ये लिंचिंग नहीं है??? मरने वाला हिन्दू और मारने वाला मुसलमान है... शायद इसलिए बुद्धिजीवियों की नजर में ये लिंचिंग नहीं है |)

Another rendition of the viral message goes on to tag many Opposition leaders like AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor questioning their silence on the matter.

TRUE OR FALSE?

Well, the incident did take place but it was way back in April 2017 and not in India but Bangladesh. The video is being shared with a false narrative now.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

We looked for the video online using the InVid Google Chrome extension and found out that the video isn’t recent. We came across this video, which was uploaded by a user on 2 April 2017.

The user had uploaded the video stating that the incident took place in Bangladesh’s Coomilla district. It also said that unknown assailants had killed Abu Syed (28) and injured Mohammad Ali (32) for the murder of of Awami League leader Monir Hossain Sarkar.

We used the keywords to look for the story online and came across an article by a daily called ‘Comillar Kagoj,’ which had covered it.

We also found out that the same video has gone viral multiple times in the past with different claims and has been debunked earlier.
