A video showing uniformed men pulling out a man from a car and then going on to beat him with sticks has gone viral on social media platforms.

Those sharing have claimed it was a recent incident following the Pahalgam attack, saying that there was a "War-like atmosphere with Pakistan is being created." (sic.)

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • We were able to trace this video back to 2022.

  • This incident is old and shows the Indian Army allegedly assaulting a civilian in Srinagar's Nowgam area.

What we found: At first, we divided the viral video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

  • We came across a report by ETV Bharat from August 2022. It noted that the Indian army allegedly assaulted civilians in the Nowgam area of Srinagar, Kashmir.

  • The report also noted that the Srinagar police had registered a case over the incident.

  • The Kashmir Convener and Greater Kashmir also reported in August 2022 that the Srinagar Police registered a case under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

  • Similarly, publications such as Deccan Herald and NDTV also published reports on this incident.

  • However, these reports also carried a statement, reportedly issued by the Indian Army's Chinar Corps where they said that they were verifying the video's authenticity, suggesting it might be an older clip circulated to :discredit the armed forces."

  • Additionally, we found a post on X by a Kashmiri journalist Umaisar Gull from August 2022 that an incident came to notice wherein some army personnel in uniform reportedly beat one civilian while other personnel present also got involved in minor fight at Nowgam chowk. The journalist credited this information to Srinagar Police.

  • We also came across a post on X by Tanvir Sadiq, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Zadibal constituency from 2022.

  • Additionally, we spotted comments under the claim post which noted that the video was "old."

Conclusion: This video has been available on the internet since 2022 and is not linked to the recent Pahalgam attack.
