A video showing a woman tied to a tree by her wrists and being publicly flogged has gone viral as Hindutva forces – mentioning the BJP and RSS – beating a Muslim woman in India.
The video, which has been shared by the page PTI BANNU had over 16k views and 500 shares at the time of writing this article.
The video has also been shared on Twitter by several Pakistani handles with the same claim.
TRUE OR FALSE?
While the video has been edited in any manner and is authentic, the claim along with it is misleading.
A reverse image of a key-frame from the video using the InVid extension led to a Hindustan Times article on the incident, which occurred in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandhshahr in March 2018.
According to the report, the woman was being publicly flogged by her husband "on the panchayat's order for eloping with another man."
Speaking to the daily, Bulandshahr superintendent of police Praveen Ranjan Singh said a case had been registered against 18 persons, of whom 12 were unidentified, after the video went viral.
Further, the panchayat pradhan, his son and the woman's husband were arrested by the police following the incident.
