A video showing a bridge in a dilapidated condition is going viral on social media, claiming that a bridge which was under construction collapsed in Supaul, Bihar.
Those sharing noted, "The ₹1200 crore bridge being built over the Kosi River between Supaul and Madhubani collapsed. Several workers were trapped in the debris, some injured, and fears of some fatalities." (sic.)
(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)
Is the claim true?: No, the claim is misleading.
This video is not recent. It dates back to March 2024 when a part of the bridge over the Kosi river between Supaul and Madhubani fell in Bihar while under construction.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) also clarified that such claims were misleading on their X page.
What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
We were directed to a Facebook post by former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader, Tejashwi Yadav from 22 March 2024.
The video's frames matched with those of the viral video.
The politician's post noted, "A major accident occurred in Bihar when an under-construction bridge worth ₹1200 crore collapsed on the Kosi river between Bheja-Bakaur of Supaul-Madhubani. Many workers were reportedly buried under the debris, injured and died."
Yadav demanded accountability from the state and central government, treated and compensation for affected.
We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and found news reports from 2024.
PTI reported that one individual died and nine others were hurt when a segment of a bridge fell in Supaul, as per officials.
The NHAI was the responsible for building it over the Kosi river, connecting two areas of Madhubani and Supaul.
As per officials, ten workers were caught beneath the rubble following the incident.
The Hindu also reported on this incident from March 2024 and their report contained visuals of the bridge collapse.
It also mentioned that the foundation stone of the bridge project was laid by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in 2014.
They also reported that the original cost of this bridge was ₹1,200 crore, but had risen to over ₹1,700 crore.
NHAI clarifies: The NHAI responded to a user on X who claimed that the incident was not recent.
The authority noted, "The incident being circulated pertains to an old accident from March 2024. The Kosi Bakaur bridge is structurally safe and in good condition."
It further mentioned that the NHAI strongly condemned the circulation of misleading content that may cause unnecessary concern.
Clarification by Supaul District Administration: Taking to their Facebook page, the district administration clarified that the video was from 2024 and the claim was wrong.
Conclusion: An old visual from 2024 of a bridge collapse in Bihar's Supaul from 2024 has gone viral on social media, as recent.
