A video of a man carrying what appears to be a sword and attacking a biker is being shared on the internet with a claim that it shows a recent incident from West Bengal, where users have given it a communal angle.

What does the viral post say?: Those sharing the clip have captioned it saying, "Look at this, Hindus, this video depicts the condition of Hindus in West Bengal, showing how our Hindus are living there. Where the Hindu population decreases and the Muslim population increases, Hindus will be slaughtered in this manner..."

The above post had garnered over 15 thousand views on the platform. Archives of similar claims can be found here, here, and here.

What is the truth?: The incident is actually from Punjab's Samrala, where a man named Surinder Singh alias 'Billu' attacked his neighbour Kultar Singh.

  • SSP Khanna Jyoti Yadav confirmed to The Quint that the incident had no communal angle to it.

How did we find that out?: On conducting a Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral clip, we found a recent news report published in The Tribune.

  • The report said that a lawyer named Kultar Singh was attacked by his neighbour Billu with a sword at Kapila Colony in Samrala. The lawyer's wife and mother were also attacked by the accused.

  • Singh and his family members suffered injuries in the attack and were later getting treatment.

  • A Hindustan Times report identified the accused as one Surinder Singh (aka Billu) and said that he had attacked his neighbour while the latter was leaving for work on bike.

  • The victim's wife Manpreet Kaur (28) and mother Sharanjit Kaur (58) were admitted to a local civil hospital to receive treatment.

What did the police say?: The Quint's WebQoof reached out to Khanna SSP Jyoti Khanna, who confirmed to us that the incident had no communal angle to it and that the accused had mental health issues.

"Prompt action was taken and the accused was arrested on the same day. An FIR was registered under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the BNS."
Jyoti Yadav, SSP Khanna

Conclusion: It is evident that the video is from Punjab and is being shared with a false communal angle.
