A video of a man wearing a helmet and brandishing what appears to be a gun is being circulated on social media platforms with a claim that it shows recent visuals from West Bengal.
What are users saying?: An X (formerly Twitter) premium user shared the clip with a caption that said, "This video will show you the condition of West Bengal. But for Sagarika Ghose, it's Propaganda by BJP. Waah TMC waah !!."
What are the facts?: The video could be traced back to at least July 2024 and shows visuals from Bangladesh's Chittagong. This makes the claim false.
How did we find that out?: On conducting a reverse image search using the help of Google Lens, we found the same visuals on the official YouTube channel of Somoy National.
The video was posted on 17 July 2024 with a title that said, "Who is this young man holding a weapon on a public road in Chittagong?#chittagong #weapon #somoytv #shorts."
News reports: A report published in Channel24 said that a man wearing a gray polo-shirt was spotted brandishing a pistol and seen scolding people around him. He was later seen loading the pistol with bullets.
It said that the man was not identified till that time. The report further mentioned that he was allegedly firing bullets at the quota protesters.
Prothom Alo, too, shared visuals of the same man who could be seen carrying the pistol. The report talked about the conflict that had spread in Bangladesh's Chittagong.
Conclusion: It is evident that an unrelated video from Bangladesh is being circulated as a recent incident from West Bengal.
