A video of a man using a metal detector and a sieve to find and collect gold, silver, and currency coins is being shared to claim that it shows him doing so on the riverbed of the Ganga.

(Archived versions of more claims on social media can be seen here and here.)

But...?: The video is a scripted one and does not really show a person collecting precious metals from the Ganga.

How did we find out the truth?: We used keywords such as "गंगा नदी सोना चाँदी' (Ganga river gold silver) to look for more details related to the video on social media platforms.

  • The search led us to the same video on Facebook, shared by a page named 'Social Junction' on 14 November 2024.

  • The page clearly states that the content that it shares is made for "awareness and educational purposes."

Conclusion: A scripted video is being shared with the false claim that it shows a man searching for gold and silver on the riverbed of the Ganga after it dried up.
