An image of a dam is being shared on the internet to claim that the Kishanganga Dam, which was purportedly closed to stop water flow to Pakistan, has recently collapsed.
Those sharing the photo have captioned it saying, "#BREAKING: Just in, India's Kishanganga Dam that was closed to stop water flow to Pakistan has collapsed."
Is the claim true?: Neither is this image recent nor does it have any connection with India. The viral photo is from June 2023 and depicts the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine that was damaged.
How did we find that out?: A simple Google Lens search directed us to a report published by Reuters that carried the same visual.
The report mentioned that Kakhovka dam's destruction will result in the flooding of tens of thousands of hectares of agricultural land in southern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian government had accused Russia of blowing up the dam, while the latter blamed the collapse on Ukraine.
The image's caption said, "A satellite image shows damaged Nova Kakhovka Dam, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kherson region, Ukraine, June 6, 2023."
Other sources: Global News, too, shared a video report about the collapse of the dam and said that it might trigger floods and endanger Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
It was posted on 6 June 2023 and was titled, "Russia, Ukraine trade blame in dam collapse that threatens lives, ecosystem."
Conclusion: It is evident that the image is old and has no connection with India.
