A video showing The Daily Show host and comedian Jon Stewart is being shared on social media, which purportedly shows him criticising US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 50 percent tariff on India for buying Russian oil.
What is being said?: In the clip, Stewart is heard mocking Trump's tariffs, saying, "Like that's going to scare a country with 5,000 years of history. India looked at him like, bro, we survived the British, we can survive your math. He's up there yelling, "No more cheap goods from India." Meanwhile, his tie is made in China, his hotel towels are from Mumbai, and his hairpiece, probably outsourced too. India, please send this guy some chai and a samosa. Maybe he will eat, calm down, and remember what country he's running."
Is it true?: No, Stewart did not make these statements. The viral claim is a deepfake.
How do we know?: First, we ran a search using the keywords 'Jon Stewart Trump India tariffs' on Google to look for his statements about this topic, but did not find any relevant results.
Next, we looked for the video on The Daily Show's official YouTube channel, where we saw Stewart in similar clothing in a video published in February.
This video had no mention of tariffs on India, since Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on India starting 1 August.
To check whether the video had been manipulated using Artificial Intelligence, we ran segments of it through Hiya's AI voice detector as well as Hive Moderation's detector.
Hiya's extension gave the audio an authenticity score of 22, stating the the voice was "likely a deepfake."
Hive Moderation's tool showed similar results, saying that it was 97 percent certain the the audio elements were likely to be AI-generated or deepfake content.
Conclusion: An AI-manipulated video of Jon Stewart is being shared to falsely claim that it shows him criticising Trump's tariffs on India.
