Has the Central Govt Announced GPS-Based Tolling System From 1 May? A Fact-Check

Ministry of Road Transport & Highways clarified that no such decision has been taken.

A post is doing the rounds on social media platforms with a claim that the central government will soon be launching a GPS-based toll system from 1 May, which would replace the FASTag system.

What is the truth?: The claim is false. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has clarified that no such decision has been taken regarding the nationwide implementation from 1 May.

How did we find that out?: We performed a keyword search on Google and found a release shared by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) on 18 April.

• It carried a clarification that mentioned no such decision to replace the existing FASTag-based toll collection system with a Satellite-based Tolling system nationwide from 1 May has been taken.

• MoRTH, in its statement, further said, "In order to enable seamless, barrier-free movement of vehicles through toll plazas and reduce travel time ‘ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System’ will be implemented at selected toll plazas."

Conclusion: It is evident that the viral claim is false as the Indian government has not taken any such decision.
