A set of videos is being shared on the internet with a claim that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has declared Israel an "illegal state" and has decided that it should not be recognised as a sovereign state.
Those sharing the post have claimed that Israel is no longer a nation, and termed it as a "stolen state".
At the time of writing this report, the post had gained over 32 thousand views on the platform.
What are the facts?: There is no available evidence to claim that the ICJ has declared Israel an "illegal state".
However, it should be noted that the court had declared Israel's presence in the "Occupied Palestinian Territory" as "unlawful" in July 2024.
How did we find that out?: We looked for news reports or any information available in the public domain to verify if the ICJ had indeed declared Israel an "illegal state".
However, we did not find any such evidence to support the claim.
We found a report published by BBC, which talked about the ICJ saying that the Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories is against international law.
The report further said that while the court's opinion is not legally binding, however, it still carries significant weight politically.
We further found a press release dated 19 July 2024 on the official website of the ICJ. It said that the "State of Israel's continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful".
However, it did not carry any declaration of the court calling Israel an "illegal state".
What about the second video?: We noticed that it showed the then Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al Maliki addressing the media after the ICJ's ruling on Israel's occupation.
On conducting a keyword search, we found the same visuals published on the official YouTube channel of TRT World.
It was shared on 19 July 2024 and its title said, "Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al Maliki briefs media after ICJ ruling on Israel’s occupation."
Conclusion: It is evident that the claim about ICJ declaring Israel an "illegal state" is false.
