A video of huge waves moving towards what appears to be a residential area is going viral on the internet with users linking it to the recent earthquake that struck Bangkok, Thailand.
An X (formerly Twitter) user shared the video with a caption that loosely translated to, "Shocking videos of earthquake in Bangkok #earthquake".
(Archives of similar such claims could be found here, here, and here.)
What are the facts?: The video could be traced back to at least January of this year, which predates the recent earthquake in Bangkok.
Additionally, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) detection tool indicated the visuals are AI-generated and not real.
What led us to the truth?: On conducting a reverse image search on the keyframes of the viral clip, we came across the same visuals posted on an Instagram handle named '@stat.us.ai'.
The post was shared on 8 January with a caption that said, "Volcanic Eruption off the Coast of Italy #volcano #eruption #earthquake #italy."
This clearly indicated the visuals predate the recent earthquake that hit Bangkok.
What did detection tools show?: Team WebQoof further verified the authenticity the video by using an AI detection tool named 'Hive Moderation', which showed over 99 percent of the visuals being generated using AI tools.
Conclusion: Evidently, the video has been generated using AI tools and does not real visuals.
