A video of an elderly man with shoes tied around his neck is going viral on social media platforms with a claim that it shows a Hindu teacher who was recently garlanded with slippers in Bangladesh.
What have users said?: Those sharing the clip have uploaded it with a caption that said, "A Hindu teacher who worked for 40 years was garlanded with slippers by radical Islamists in Bangladesh..."
Is this claim true?: The claim is misleading. The man seen in the video was identified as one Ahmed Ali, who was thrashed by an angry mob in Bangladesh for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammad.
How did we find that out?: On performing a Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral clip, we found the same visuals shared on an Instagram account called 'tapas.rgkar2019'.
The post that was shared on 19 June identified the man as Ahmed Ali, who is a doctor practicing in the Rajbari district of Bangladesh for a long time.
News reports: Taking hints from the above post, we conducted a keyword search on Google and came across a news report published by Dhaka Times 24.
The report said that Ali, who was a retired community medical officer, was thrashed by an angry mob in Rajbari for allegedly insulting the Prophet.
It carried a statement from the Baliakandi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jamal Uddin, who said that Ali had made derogatory comments about the Prophet at a tea shop in the morning. When this news spread in the area, a mob gathered and assaulted the man.
The report further said that Ali was being treated at a local hospital.
A news report in bbarta24 added that Ali was a retired community medical officer of the Janata Union Health Complex. It said that the situation was brought under control after the police and army personnel intervened.
The incident took place on 15 June near the Beruli Bazar football field.
CA Press Wing clarifies: The official Facebook account of Bangladesh Chief Advisor's Press Wing Facts clarified that the viral claim was misleading.
The post, too, identified the man as a community medical officer named Ahmad Ali, who belonged to the Muslim community.
Conclusion: It is evident that the viral video is being shared with a misleading communal claim.
