A video of some foreign dignitaries meeting former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is going viral on social media platforms.
What did the viral post say?: An X (formerly Twitter) premium user called '@Jhunjhunuwala_' shared the clip with a caption that said, "For a Prime Minister of India, nothing could be more humiliating than this."
It insinuated that Singh was serving as the Prime Minister at that time.
What are the facts?: The claim is misleading as the meeting did not take place during Singh's tenure as the PM.
The visuals date back to 2015, when Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhang Dejiang met Gandhi and Singh.
How did we find that out?: Using the help of Google Lens, we conducted a simple reverse image search and found the same visuals uploaded on the official X handle of the Congress party.
It was shared on 16 June 2015 with a caption that said, "A Chinese Parliamentary Delegation called on Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh."
News reports: A news report published in Zee News said that a parliamentary delegation from China, which was led by Zhang Dejiang, met former PM Dr Manmohan Singh in the national capital.
The then Congress president Sonia Gandhi was also present.
Dejiang had also met PM Narendra Modi and several other prominent leaders in the country.
Official press release from China: As per an official press release shared by the Chinese Embassy, Dejiang met with the then Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
It further said that Dejiang also met Gandhi and former PM Singh.
Conclusion: It is evident that the claim is misleading as Singh was not the PM when he met the Chinese leader.
