Did Ex-DIG D Roopa Deny Govt Award Over Pragya’s Karkare Remark?

This is false, as clarified by ex-DIG (prisons) D Roopa, whose picture and name, albeit falsely, have been used.

CLAIM

A tweet by one 'मुल्ला नू उद्दीन जुमलेबाज' (Mulla nu Uddin Jumlebaaz) claims that an IPS officer Roopa Yadav denied an award given by the Modi government owing to BJP MP Pragya Thakur's remarks on 26/11 martyr Hemant Karkare.

The tweet reads: "आईपीएस रुपा यादव जी ने मोदी सरकार के अवार्ड लेने से मना कर दिया है,बोली मेरा जमीर इजाज़त नही देता कि हमारे देश के शहीद हेमंत करकरे जिन्हें वीरता का सर्वोच्च सम्मान मिला है को भाजपा की नवनिर्वाचित सांसद जो आतंकवाद की आरोपी है वो करकरे जी को देशद्रोही और गद्दार और गालियां देती और और उसकी पार्टी यहां मुझे अवार्ड देकर ढोंग कर रही। सैल्यूट तो बनता है भाईयों"

(Translated: IPS officer Roopa Yadav has denied Modi government's award, and said that she cannot accept an award from a party whose MP from Bhopal and terror accused Sadhvi Pragya has called martyr Hemant Karkare a 'traitor' and 'anti-national'. I salute this woman.')

The tweet had received over 830 retweets and 2.7k likes at the time of writing this article.

This claim is false and has been called out by ex-DIG (prisons) D Roopa, whose picture and name, albeit falsely, have been used in the tweet.

Taking to Twitter, Roopa said that police officers are awarded only the President's Police medal, which she had already received for meritorious service.

Clarifying this-- firstly there's no such award for cops. We get President's Police Medal. I have already got President's Police medal for meritorious service. Pic is mine. But surname mentioned is incorrect. https://t.co/RhyNMNLQLv

The former DIG was awarded the President's Police Medal in September 2017 by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, in the presence of former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah.

Roopa was lauded widely after her report highlighted alleged irregularities in the Bengaluru prison, including preferential treatment to AIADMK leader VK Sasikala.

Earlier that year, Roopa had submitted a report which revealed that Sasikala, who was serving a four-year sentence in the disproportionate assets case at the Parapanna Agrahara Central Prison, was given preferential treatment and there was "a talk" that Rs 2 crore had exchanged hands.
