TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim is false. Neither was the man fined Rs 35,000 nor is the woman sitting on the road his wife. The incident happened on 25 September in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura.

According to a press release by Mathura Police, the man set his car ablaze as a part of a plan to marry the woman seen in the video.

Ashok Kumar Meena, Additional SP, Mathura told The Quint that the video is from Mathura, but the man seen in the video was not fined Rs 35,000 and that the context is entirely different.

The press release issued by Mathura police mentions that the incident took place on 25 September and the man seen in the video has been identified as Shubham, who is a resident of Mathura, while the woman’s name is Anjali Sharma.

Sharma was married to someone else and had three children from the marriage. Shubham told the police that he was associated with Anjali for eight years as they worked in partnership in the same company that dealt with multi-level marketing.

Anjali’s husband and in-laws objected to her relationship with Shubham following which Anjali moved out of her husband’s house.

The press release further added that the duo along with Anjali’s three children reached outside a police station in a car and put the same car on fire. Post that, they opened fire on police officials and public that led to a chaos on the spot.

“Shubham and Anjali had decided to get married outside a police station and as per the plan, they would put the car on fire, do open firing and whoever would come on their way, they will shoot the person, even if the person is a police official,” the press release read.

The motive behind this plan was to get media attention and that Shubham would become famous. The duo had also conveyed the details of the plan to Shubham’s mother, added the release.

Shubham also told the police that if he didn’t get media coverage by the incident, he would have put Anjali and her children on fire. The police officials also accessed the conversation between Shubham and Anjali with Shubham’s mother wherein they told the details of the plan to her.

The police has arrested Shubham, Anjali, Shubham’s mother and seized illegal guns from them. The case has been registered in Mathura’s Sadar Bazar police station and they have been charged under 3/25 Arms Act, and Sections 186, 188, 332, 353, 307, 431, 435, 504, 506 and 7 CLA Act.

Mathura Police had also issued a statement regarding the same incident on their official Twitter handle on 26 September.
