A video from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's interview with NDTV is going viral on social media to claim that it shows her admitting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is winning elections by rigging Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

What did Gupta say?: Responding to the allegations of EVM hacking, Gupta could be heard saying in Hindi that loosely translated to, "When they were hacking the EVMs for the past 70 years, it was fine, but now when we did it, they are feeling bad..."

The above post had garnered over seven lakh views on the platform. More archives of similar claims could be viewed here, here, and here.

What are the facts?: The viral video is clipped and is being shared with a misleading context. A longer version showed Gupta questioning and countering the allegations made by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

What led us to the truth?: On conducting a keyword search using the words "ndtv rekha gupta", we found the full version of the interview posted on NDTV India's official YouTube channel.

  • It was shared on 20 September with a title that said, "Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Exclusive: 'I want to be among the public...' Rekha Gupta tells the story of the attack on her."

  • At around the 2:30 timestamp, the interviewer could be heard asking, "Rahul Gandhi keeps saying that you hack EVMs. This is why ABVP, BJP are winning because all of them hack EVMs. Even the Election Commission is with you."

  • To this, Gupta responds by saying, "When they were hacking EVMs for the past 70 years, it was fine. But, now that we did it, they are feeling bad..."

She continued and said, "When they [Congress] win, it's a public mandate. When we [BJP] win, it's EVM hacking. Can someone tell me in which book, this formula is written. From where did Rahul Gandhi study this. I mean, a perception is being created to mislead the innocent public by his speeches, does he know anything else other than this."

Conclusion: Evidently, the viral video of Delhi CM Rekha Gupta was clipped and shared with a misleading context.
