CLAIM

In yet another false claim, Canada-based controversial writer Tarek Fatah shared a video with his over 5,82,200 followers on Twitter. The video shows a group of girls dancing to a ‘hindi devotional song’, and Fatah claimed that the video is from India.

Another writer, Madhu Kishwar, followed suit and shared the same video. However on being called out by multiple Twitter users, Kishwar said that she was aware that the video was not from India.

TRUE OR FALSE?

Neither is the video from India nor are the girls dancing to a hindi devotional song. The audio of the video has been manipulated to add the devotional song.

The video actually shows a artists of the China Disabled People's Performing Arts Troupe performing the ‘Thousand-hand Bodhisattva’ dance at United Nations headquarters in New York.

WHAT DID WE FIND OUT

On fragmenting the video and then conducting a reverse image search, we came across a post which hosted a photo from the same dance sequence. The post read ‘Beautiful chiness dancing of the goddess of compassion and mercy (sic).”

Taking a cue from here, we used keywords “Chinese dance” and ran a reverse image search on the same picture through Google. We then came across a tweet by ‘Global Times’ which had a couple of pictures from the dance performance.

As per this tweet, the pictures showed the artists of China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe perform Thousand-hand Bodhisattva dance in New York.

We then searched for the same video on YouTube using ‘ China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe New York dance’ as keywords and found the same video was uploaded by ‘New China TV’ in 2018.

So, the claim made by Madhu Kishwar and Tarek Fatah that the video is from India and that the girls are dancing to a hindi devotional song is false.
