A video of multiple buildings engulfed in flames is being shared on social media platforms as recent visuals from India, amid the recent escalations between India and Pakistan.
An X (formerly Twitter) Twitter user shared the clip with a caption that said, "Good morning india. #OperationBunyanulMarsoos (sic)."
What are the facts?: The claim is false. The incident dates back to March, when a fire broke out at a building in Nepal during the pro-monarchy protests.
How did we find that out?: We divided the video into several keyframes and conducted a reverse image search on them.
- This directed us to a news report published in The News Mill, which said that two people had lost their lives in violent pro-monarch protest.
- Following this, a curfew was imposed and the Nepal Army was deployed.
- The report further mentioned that the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) had supported the protest.
- Another report shared on a website called 'Business Darshan' identified the building as Herb Production and Processing Company in Kathmandu, Nepal.
- The report added that the main building as well as the production building were completely burnt down.
Geolocating the place: Using the available information as hints, we searched for the company's name on Google Maps and found a location which showed similarities to the viral clip.
Comparing visuals: Team WebQoof compared keyframes from the viral clip with the visuals available on Google Maps and could conclude that the incident indeed took place in Kathmandu.
Other sources: A WION video report on the pro-monarchy protests also showed the same buildings in the background.
- The video was shared on 28 March and it was titled, "Nepal: Pro-monarchy Protests Turn Violent in Kathmandu | World News | WION Dispatch."
Conclusion: Evidently, the video is old and unrelated to India.
