A graphic, purportedly shared by news organisation BBC, is being widely shared to claim that it shows a list of the 10 most corrupt political parties in the world.

The claim: The graphic, which shows the Indian National Congress at the fourth position, is being shared to claim that the Gandhi-led party was found to be one of the most corrupt parties in the world by the BBC.

The Quint also received a query to verify this claim on its WhatsApp tipline.

(Archived versions of more posts sharing this claim can be seen here, here, and here.)

Is it true?: No, the claim is false as BBC never published this graphic or any such findings.

How do we know?: Team WebQoof had debunked this claim back in March 2017 and 2018, when it had gone viral on social media platforms.

  • We were able to trace the image back to a website called ‘BBC News Point’, which is not a website associated with the BBC.

  • The 2018 version of the claim showed the Congress party listed at number two, as seen in this archived version of 'BBC News Point.'

  • An alternate version of this page, called 'BBC News Hub', redirects to an empty webpage in 2025.

  • Additionally, we came across an X (formerly Twitter) post by former BBC journalist Trushar Barot, who had responded to a post sharing the claim back in 2018.

  • He had asked the poster to take down their original post after they found that it was a 'fake site'.

Lastly, there are no recent graphics or studies published by the BBC which find the Indian National Congress to be one of the most corrupt parties in the world.

Conclusion: An old, fake graphic is being shared to falsely claim that it shows a BBC graphic that found Congress to be among the 10 most corrupt political parties in the world.
