A video is going viral online to claim that it shows an "Islamist mob attacking" Hindu temples, their homes and crops in Sherpur district of Bangladesh.
How did we find out the truth?: We performed a reverse image search on some of the keyframes of the viral video and this led us to reports shared by Jamuna TV, Dhaka Tribune and The Daily Star.
It stated that it shows an attack on shrines and not on Hindu temples.
It also stated that this happened in Murshidpur Darbar Sharif in Sherpur, Bangladesh on 26 November 2024.
We also found a reply to the viral claim shared by a Bangladeshi journalist and fact-checker, Shohanur Rahman, who stated that this claim is false.
"Hindutva handles are falsely sharing the incident of an attack on a Muslim shrine as an attack on Hindus," he added.
We also reached out to a reporter from Bangladesh, Shahed Siddique, Head of Input from Independent Television, who confirmed to us that there is no communal angle in this story.
"It was a big clash between two Muslim shrine groups dominating some areas that resulted (in) one killed and many injured. But there were no attack on Hindus," he added.
Conclusion: A fight between two groups from the Muslim community in Bangladesh is being shared with a false communal twist.
