The Kolkata flyover collapse has claimed at least 26 lives and injured over 80. The construction company has come under fire for technical snags and repeated delays in the completion of the construction work.
Hyderabad-based Iragavarapu Venkata Reddy Construction Limited (IVCRL), responsible for the construction, is being questioned as the police have arrested three employees and detained five.
Along with IVRCL, Rajat Baksi who owns Sandhyamani Projects was responsible for casting the part of the bridge that caved in on Wednesday, reports The Telegraph. Rajat is also a cousin of TMC leader Sanjay Baksi.
However, Bakshi denies that his cousin had any role to play in getting him a contract. The report read that this was Rajat’s first assignment at constructing a flyover, he used to supply cranes and labourers to construction sites.
Maintaining that he had done nothing wrong, he claims that he’s being single-handedly targetted out of 20 other sub-contractors, because he shares a surname with TMC party leader.
This major mishap in the election week has unleashed a political slugfest which has forced the ruling TMC on the backfoot, reports The Hindustan Times.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tried to wash her hands off it by blaming the “Left rule” as the tender was passed under the previous government.
However, many have refused to buy the argument as Kolkata Mayor and a close aide of Mamta, Sovan Chatterjee, was chased out of the accident site by an angry crowd.
