The election on 15 May saw the BJP fall short of the majority mark as Congress-JD(S) decided to join hands and form a post-poll alliance.

The Congress came to power in the state in 2013 by defeating the BJP, JD(S) and the Karnataka Jantha Paksha — a party flouted by BS Yeddyurappa.
