The Madras High Court on Friday, 27 April, dismissed a petition seeking premature release moved by Nalini Sriharan – a convict in the 1991 assassination case of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, ANI reported.
A bench headed by KK Sasidharan and R Subramanian passed the order, adding the Madras High Court cannot interfere in the matter since the issue has been already seized of by the Supreme Court, The Times of India reported.
Sriharan is currently serving life term in the Vellore Central Prison. She was sentenced to death by the trial court in the case on 28 January 1998 and her sentence was commuted to life term by the Tamil Nadu Governor on 24 April 2000.
In March 2016, Sriharan was granted 24-hour parole by the Madras High Court to attend her father’s last rites.
