1. Water Stock In Mumbai Lakes Rises To 6%

After two days of heavy rain in the city, the water level in the seven lakes supplying water to the city increased to 6.06% or 87,648 million litres (ml) on Sunday, from 5.31% or 76,833ml on Saturday. The water stock in the lakes stood at 4.9% or 71,017ml on Friday.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stopped dipping into the state’s reserves from Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna lakes to cater to the city’s water demand in the past two days. Earlier this week, BMC had to resort to the state’s reserves from the two lakes owing to a delayed monsoon and amid a 10% water cut in the city.

2. A Year After Mumbai Bridge Collapsed, Report Shows Flaws Were Pointed Out In 2014

Could the Railways have averted the July 3 Gokhale bridge collapse that killed two and injured three? Yes, had the Railways taken note of its own four-year-old findings in the bridge register.

On 20 October 2014, the section in-charge of bridges had noticed and reported the problems, deterioration and unsatisfactory condition of the cantilever portion in the pedestrian pathway of the bridge. On November 17, 2015, the divisional engineer of Western Railway (WR) ordered compliance to tackle the deterioration pointed out in the report, but did not question why no work was undertaken in one year after the condition was reported.

3. BMC Plans To Install CCTV Cameras At 91 Flood-Prone Spots

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to install CCTV cameras at 91 locations prone to flooding to monitor the situation on the ground during rains. This year, pre-monsoon inspections by the civic body found that there are 225 flooding spots in the city. Of these, 134 spots are already covered by the Mumbai Police and BMC’s CCTV camera network.

4. After More Than 70 Years, Aarey Village Gets Electricity

Deepak Nimble (32) no longer has to wait till he reaches his office to charge his mobile phone. Nimble is a resident of Naushacha Pada in Aarey Colony. For more than 70 years, the village didn’t have electricity. Not any longer. It got electricity connection for the first time on Sunday.

The village, where till now students studied under kerosene lamps, received an NOC last month from a veterinary college which owns the land parcel on which the village is located, ending years of deadlock. However, the final hurdle in the way of getting funding for the electricity supply was cleared after a Mumbai resident chipped in with nearly Rs 2 lakh.

5. CNG Hiked To ₹51.99/kg In Mumbai, Piped Gas To ₹31.79/scm

The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has announced to hike the base price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by 32 paise and piped natural gas (PNG) by 23 paise from 1 July.

After the revision, CNG will cost ₹51.99 per kg, while PNG will now cost ₹31.79/standard cubic meter (SCM) and ₹37.39/scm for the first and second slabs, respectively. The price revision will be have an impact on 6.25 lakh motorists and more than 7 lakh households. There are around 44,500 taxis, 2.12 lakh autorickshaws and 1,800 BEST buses which ply on CNG.
