The state of Meghalaya on Monday passed a resolution against the ban on cattle slaughter. Meghalaya joins Kerala in protesting the ban against the sale of cattle for slaughtering purposes.
The move comes after two BJP heavyweights in Meghalaya resigned in protest of the Centre’s decision. Currently ruled by Congress, the state is scheduled to go to polls in 2018.
North Garo Hills district BJP president, Bachu Marak, who resigned from the party last week, said:
I cannot compromise on the sentiments of the Garos. As a Garo, it is my responsibility to protect the interests of my community. Beef eating is a part of our culture and tradition. Imposition of BJP’s non-secular ideology on us is not acceptable.Bachu Marak
Just days before Bachu’s resignation, West Garo Hills district president, Bernard Marak, exited the party over the same issue.
The former BJP leaders organised a beef party at the Eden Bari locality of Tura on 10 June, in which over five hundred people participated, reported The Hindustan Times.
