'Can't Get Into Suitability': Supreme Court On Justice Gowri's Appointment

The petitioners had flagged hate speeches allegedly made by her, in their challenge to her eligibility.

Citing reasons for dismissing the plea against appointment of Justice Gowri to the Madras High Court, the Supreme Court on Friday, said that it cannot examine the suitability but only the eligibility of a candidate recommended for judgeship.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai said:

"We have gone through Constitution bench judgments and said we cannot get into suitability of the candidate."

The same bench had dismissed the plea filed by Madras High Court lawyers challenging Justice Gowri's appointment, on 7 February but gave reasons for dismissing the plea on Friday, 10 February.
