1. Kathua Rape Case: SC to Hear Plea Alleging Torture of Witness Talib Hussain

The Supreme Court will, on Wednesday, 8 August, hear a plea alleging that Talib Hussain, a key witness in the Kathua gang rape and murder case, is being tortured by the Jammu and Kashmir police in a fake rape case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices DY Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee considered the submission of a close relative of Hussain, seeking urgent hearing on the plea.

A habeas corpus (produce the body) writ petition has been filed by the cousin of the witness. It alleges that Hussain has been kept in illegal detention and being subjected to custodial torture. Hussain’s family alleged that he is being tortured in police custody in a fake rape case.

2. Police Rescue Missing Girl from Deoria Shelter Home, Accused Arrested

The district administration in Gorakhpur rescued a missing girl from Deoria by raiding and sealing the illegal shelter house on 7 August.

The owner, Girija Tripathi, her daughter, along with four other staff have been arrested.

On Tuesday evening, a joint team of district administration and police conducted raid at the old age shelter home of Tripathi. A 21-year-old girl who went missing from Deoria shelter home was rescued, said ADM Administration Prabhunath.

"Medical examination of the rescued girl will be conducted. We are going to record her statement to get more details", added Prabhunath.

Earlier on 7 August, Deoria police arrested Kanchanlata, another daughter of Girija Tripathi for her involvement in the alleged sex racket being operated under the pretext of a shelter home.

3. US Navy Vet Convicted for Murder of Indian Engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla in Kansas

A US Navy veteran, who shot and killed Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla and injured two others at a suburban Kansas City bar in 2017, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole on 7 August.

Adam Purinton of Olathe shot and killed Kuchibhotla, and wounded two others – Indian national Alok Madasani and Kansas resident Ian Grillot – at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas, in February 2017.

Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty in federal court to hate crime and firearm offences arising out of the shooting.

At his federal guilty-plea hearing, Purinton admitted in open court that he targeted and shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani because of their race, colour, and national origin, and that he shot Grillot during an attempt to flee the scene of the crime.

4. Two Sentenced to Death for Raping and Murdering Minor

A special court for POCSO cases in Jodhpur, Rajasthan sentenced two persons, Ghewar Singh and Sharavan Singh, to death on 7 August holding them guilty of raping and murdering a minor.

In the order, Special Judge Vamita Singh said the action of both the accused was dastardly, against humanity, gruesome and therefore fell under the rarest of rare crime category.

"For this, it is bounden to punish Ghewar Singh and Sharavan Singh only with death sentence for justice to prevail," the order said.

A police team led by the then SP (Barmer) Rahul Barhat had arrested Ghewar Singh and Sharavan Singh along with three others for abducting a minor girl from her house in village Rinva in Barmer's Chohtan on the night of 29-30 March 2013 and raping her.

After raping the girl, the accused killed her to erase the evidence, said prosecution counsel Karnaram Choudhary.

5. Two Maharashtra Men Kidnapped in Malaysia Rescued, Likely to Return Home Soon

Two Indian nationals Rohan and Kaustubh Vaidya, both brothers, who were reportedly kidnapped in Malaysia on 1 August when they had went for a business meeting, were rescued on 8 August.

The Vaidyas run frozen fish supply company in Thane and were called to Kuala Lumpur to meet officials of a company named Miss Lee Frozen Foods.

They called their family on 2 August and told them that they had been abducted and the kidnappers were demanding Rs 1 crore as ransom for their release.

The family contacted Thane police and a complaint was registered against unknown accused. The family also contacted Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Indian Embassy in Malaysia subsequently informed the local police about the case.

According to Thane police, the victims called up their family in the wee hours of 8 August, and informed them that they have been rescued by Malaysian police and would return home the same day.

6. Three Arrested for Killing Man in Delhi

Three men were arrested for allegedly killing a car driver with an intention to loot his car and burning his body to conceal his identity, the police said on 7 August.

The accused were identified as Vipin Kumar (20), Kartar (22) and Abhishek Dahiya (20), they added.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that on 1 June, they had called one Aryan, a resident of Ladrawan village in Karala with an intention to kill him.

When Aryan reached Karala, he was taken to a nearby farmhouse where the trio injected him with an anesthetic drug and he became unconscious.

They took him to an isolated area between Rohini Sector 34 and Sector 29 and covered his body with garbage. The accused later poured petrol on his body and burnt it to destroy evidence.

7. 19-Yr-Old Found Dead in House; Husband, In-Laws Arrested

Thane police arrested the husband and in-laws of a 19-year-old woman who was allegedly found dead in her house, on 7 August. While her in-laws had earlier claimed it was a suicide, the police, after investigation, have lodged a murder case, sources said.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Kawaljit Kaur, was found dead in her house in Thane area on 23 July. “Her husband and his family claimed that she had committed suicide. We had lodged an accidental death report but we were investigating,” said an officer.

He added, “The woman’s father, who had come from New Delhi, however, claimed his daughter was being harassed over dowry.”

On 7 August, the police booked the family of Kawaljit’s husband. “We have booked the husband, his brothers and the rest of the family for harassing her over dowry and for killing her,” a senior officer said.

8. Three Held for Killing Man Over Love Affair

Three persons, including an elderly man, were arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing a 29-year-old man, whose body was found on the railway tracks in Kalyan, Mumbai, police said on 7 August.

According to police, the victim, Surendra Mishra, was in a relationship with a young woman, whose father was against it and plotted his murder.

The accused were identified as the woman's father Rajendra Prasad Tiwari (47) and two others- Bhaskar Naringkar (67), a retired employee of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST) and Ravi Ashok Choudhary (34), a plumber, police said.

"Mishra, a resident of Kopri and an employee of a private firm, and the woman had been in a relationship for the past seven years. Her parents were against their affair," a senior police official said.

"As the victim planned to marry the woman, her father hatched a conspiracy to kill him," he said.

9. Two Arrested for Duping Job Seekers with Fake Promises of Jobs in Railways

Two men were arrested for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of providing them jobs in railways, police said on 7 August.

The accused – Ajeet Singh (30) and Vimal Kumar (29) – were arrested near Food Corporation of India (FCI) building on Sansad Marg in New Delhi on 6 August, they added.

The arrests were made after the police received complaints that Singh lured innocent people with placement in railways under "ministry quota". He gave fake appointment letters in lieu of money, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Kumar Singla said.

On a tip-off, police arrested both the accused and recovered fake appointment letters of railways and FCI from their possession. A pendrive having formats of appointment letters was also recovered.
