Karnataka Home Minister G Parameswara defended Bangalore police’s ineptitude to provide adequate security to women on New Year’s Eve by saying:

Unfortunately, what is happening is that on days like New Years, Brigade Road, Commercial Street, or MG road, a large number of youngsters gather. And youngsters were almost like westerners. They tried to copy the westerners, not only in their mindset but even in their dressing. So some disturbance, some girls are harassed, these kind of things do happen.

The minister made this remark defending the 1,500 personnel that he said were deployed in the city on the night when several cases of molestation and sexual harassment were reported by women from different parts of Bengaluru.

The minister also said that “these kinds of things do happen.”

Events like New Years or events like Christmas day, or many other events similar to that, there are women who are harassed or treated badly. These kinds of things do happen. But we do take proper kind of care. We also take some precautionary measures – in fact police now and then informed that this is an area where we have to be extremely careful.
G Parameswara, Karnataka Home Minister

According to Bangalore Mirror, the traffic police booked 461 cases of drunken driving in the city on New Year's Eve. Riders could be seen openly accosting women on the street. The 108 ambulance service attended as many as 471 emergency calls from Bengaluru city.
