It will soon be 80 days since the ‘Occupy UGC’ protest started.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to stop the monetary support for fellows pursuing doctoral research studies. The stipend through fellowships – on which the researchers practically live – will only be given to the top 15 per cent of the people who appear for an exam called the National Eligibility Test (NET).

On 9 December 2015, the students protesting outside the UGC were lathi charged.

Delhi police used various methods of curbing the protests – water canons, hit, push, and sound bombs.

The absence of media attention has caused a catastrophe like situation for almost 35,000 students, according to a student group called The Media Collective.

The group has the published this video explaining the exact problem faced by the students pursuing research studies with the government’s help that the government plans to withdraw.
