PM Modi and President Erdogan Give a Joint Statement

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today pitched free trade agreement with India as a starting point to expand the ambit of bilateral economic ties.

In a joint statement by President Erdogan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two leaders spoke of strengthening cooperation for trade and to combat terror.

Our bilateral trade of around $6 billion does not do justice to our ties. Both sides can do much more. I am sure that Turkish business will explore more opportunities in India.

Jamia to Confer an Honorary Degree

Jamia Millia Islamia will confer an honorary degree on the Turkish President. The decision, however, has not gone down well with many Jamia students who “condemned” the decision in a Change.org petition.

Addressed to Vice Chancellor Talat Ahmed, the petition reads:

Erdogan, who has won a flawed and fraudulent plebiscite in order to crown himself the unchallenged dictator of Turkey, is a toxic influence in Turkish public life, in West Asia and in the world at large. He has stifled dissent, cracked down on the rights of working people, women and minorities in Turkey and is conducting a brutal war on the peoples of Kurdistan.
