Born to Sikh father from an aristocratic family and a Hungarian Jewish mother, Sher-Gil had a heritage as unique as her work. According to records with the National Gallery of Modern Art, she shuttled between Europe and India all her life, thus imbibing cultural values from both the sides.

In 1929, Sher-Gil went to the Ecole des Beaux Arts – the French national school of fine arts – in Paris. She flourished as an artist there.

Over 100 paintings of Sher-Gil are preserved at NGMA. Sher-Gil passed away on 5 December 1941 in Lahore which is now in Pakistan.
