The parched lands of Marathwada finally felt the tingle of rains, as satisfying rainfall has flushed through Marathwada, a region in Maharashtra that has faced drought for 3 years in a row.

Latur city, which was supplied water by train, has received good rainfall in the last week. So, the municipal corporation has decided to resume water distribution by pipeline. Citizens will get tap water after a gap of 10 months!

North Maharashtra — that has been receiving heavy rainfall — will have a part of that water eventually flow into Marathwada. Even the doors of dams in Nashik have been opened allowing that water to flow into Godavari, that passes through the five drought hit districts.

FYI: The amount of water stored today in various barrages/dams is almost double compared to the water that was stored by July end last year!

This, mainly thanks to various schemes undertaken by the Maharashtra government and a number of NGOs including those of Nana Patekar and Aamir Khan, because of which water is being harvested in all eight districts of the region.
