A 19-year-old from Tamil Nadu’s Srivilliputhur was arrested for allegedly posting "abusive" and "obscene" remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook, police said.

Thirumurugan was arrested following a complaint by a local BJP functionary after he allegedly made comments on a public Facebook post in which BJP district secretary Marimuthu had posted criticising Vijay-starrer Mersal.

According to the police, the youngster also allegedly used vulgar language against PM in a private chat with the BJP functionary. Police have invoked the IT Act and filed a case of ‘attempting to invite unrest’ against him. He has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

The Quint has been trying to reach Thirumurugan’s family but they have been advised not to speak to the media.

Mersal stirred controversy upon release for scenes that mocked the BJP government’s implementation of GST, and the Digital India initiative. The government wanted them removed from the movie.
