Policeman Shot Dead

  • A policeman was shot dead by suspected militants in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday.
  • Constable Khurshid Ahmad Ganai was shot at by unknown gunmen outside his residence in Koil.
  • Ganai sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment, a police official said. The cop, however, succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

Body Recovered from Jhelum

  • The body of a youth, Shahnawaz Khatana, was recovered from Jhelum River on Saturday morning.
  • It was recovered at Sangam in Anantnag district.
  • The locals alleged that Khatana had drowned in the river on Friday when security forces chased a group of stone-pelters in the area.

Separatists Remain Defiant

  • Pulwama, Pampore and Srinagar remain under curfew to maintain law and order in view of the separatist plans to march towards the headquarters of Army at Badamibagh.
  • The separatists have called for a march towards Chinar Corps army’s headquarter in Kashmir at Badamibagh cantonment here.
  • The separatist camp, which is spearheading the agitation in the Valley over the civilian killings during the protests against Wani’s encounter, has extended the strike call in the Valley till 1 September.
  • As many as 68 people, including two cops, have been killed and several thousand others injured in the clashes that began on 9 July.

Kashmir Curfew Day 50

  • Normal life remained paralysed for the 50th consecutive day due to curfew, restrictions and separatist sponsored strike.
  • Shops, private offices, educational institutions and petrol pumps remained closed while public transport continued to be off roads.
  • The attendance in government offices and banks was also affected, the official said.
  • Mobile Internet also continued to remain suspended in the entire Valley, where the outgoing facility on prepaid mobiles remained barred.
  • Meanwhile, curfew was lifted from south Kashmir’s Anantnag town after 49 days on Friday.

Mehbooba Meets Modi

  • In Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Modi to discuss the security situation in the state, while blaming Pakistan for openly trying to provoke and fuel tensions in the Kashmir Valley.
  • She called for talks between interlocutors and all stakeholders to resolve the Kashmir situation and also urged separatists to come forward and help save the lives of innocent youth.
  • “As a mother, I’m pained to see that kids are being told to go out and stone police stations”, she said.
