The Shia Waqf Board in Uttar Pradesh filed a 30-page affidavit to the Supreme Court on Tuesday over the disputed site in Ayodhya.

A mosque can be built in a Muslim-dominated area at a reasonable distance from the disputed site in Ayodhya.

The Board said that the temple can be built at the site, with a mosque nearby. It also sought time from SC to set up a committee for exploring an amicable settlement of the dispute.

The Board further told the Supreme Court that Babri Masjid was its property and that only the Waqf Board was entitled to negotiate an amicable settlement of the dispute.

Shia Waqf Board’s Claim

So far, the Shia Wakf Board has had absolutely nothing to do with the case. This is the first time it has approached the Supreme Court over the case. On the other hand, the Sunni Central Board of Wakfs had claimed possession of the mosque for the first time in 1961.

The clutch of petitions against building a Ram temple are currently represented by an umbrella organisation, The Babri Masjid Action Committee.

The Shia Waqf Board’s affidavit is based on the rationale that the mosque was built in 1528 by Mir Baqi, who was Shia. This makes the mosque a Shia property and they claim that they want a Ram Mandir to be built at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

However, the question that everybody is asking is why were they silent for so long?

Shias have never been party to the Babri Masjid case which is being fought out between three parties – the Sunni Waqf Board, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Nirmohi Akhara.
