CBSE chairperson RK Chaturvedi’s tenure ended prematurely on 31 August amid controversy. Chaturvedi was originally supposed to have held his position as the Central Board of Secondary Education’s head for another four years, as per a report by ANI.

Gujarat-cadre IAS officer Anita Karwal has taken over as the CBSE’s new chief. Karwal is an additional secretary in the human resource development (HRD) ministry.

A Stint Rife With Controversy

Chaturvedi, a Madhya Pradesh-cadre officer, has been relegated to a less sought-after position, that of director-general of the National Skill Development Agency, as per a report in The Telegraph.

His short stint, ever since he assumed the position as the CBSE’s head in July 2016, has been rife with a series of controversies.

These include errors in evaluating Class 12 board examination papers, inflation of marks, ordering affiliated schools to only subscribe to NCERT textbooks, among others.

On 24 July 2017, a complaint was lodged by MPs from Bengal and Tamil Nadu which claimed that tough questions were being put forth to students taking the NEET in their mother tongue.

On 30 May 2017, The Quint reported that the CBSE had unfairly and unequally spiked the marks of its Class XII students this year, following a decade-long tradition of tampering with students’ marks to appear high-scoring.
