Following severe criticism over the erection of illegal hoarding and banners for his arrival at Chennai’s Maduravoyil, superstar Rajinikanth apologised to the public. He further requested fan clubs to avoid setting them up in the future.

It was the actor’s first public address in Chennai after announcing his political entry on 31 December last year. Rajini inaugurated a statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran at the Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute where over 5000 students were reportedly present.
The banners covered a 6km stretch leading up to the college and covered several footpath, making it difficult for pedestrian to navigate the route. Several of the banners were further falling down or standing precariously on wooden poles.
Activists criticised the actor for failing to learn from other politicians, whose apathy towards public safety has led to three deaths over the last year.
Speaking to TNM, Jayaraman Venkatesan of Arappor Iyakka had said, “This is a violation of municipal law as well as contempt of court. But the police won't even file an FIR against these illegal banners. The Corporation also has to take action. It is very disappointing in the case of Rajinikanth. If he wants to create change in the system, he has to openly come tell his cadre that they shouldn't put up these banners. He has failed to do that. If they talking about creating change, they should make it clear that such illegal means should not be used to communicate with the people.”
Activists had demanded that Rajinikanth instruct his followers to not partake in the banner culture and also apologise for the inconvenience it caused pedestrians. The superstar then gave in to both demands in his address at the college, after unveiling a statue of the former CM.
