1. Jet Airways Hostess Arrested for Smuggling $480,200 out of India

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, on Tuesday, arrested an air hostess of Jet Airways who allegedly tried to smuggle $480,200 out of the country. The accused was intercepted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and the amount was found wrapped in a foil with her.

The accused was on a flight to Hong Kong on Monday when she was held by the DRI official based on a tip-off. “DRI has recovered $480,200 valued at Rs 3.21 crore, from the crew member of Jet Airways,” the officer said.

2. Bhima Koregaon: 13 More Arrested in Connection With the Violence

Rural Police, on Tuesday, arrested 13 more people and detained three minors in connection with the violence in Sanaswadi-Bhima Koregaon during the 200th-anniversary celebrations of Battle of Koregaon on 1 January.

An event to mark the 200th anniversary of Battle of Koregaon in Pune was marred by clashes between Maratha and Dalit groups. As many as 43 persons have been taken into custody in connection with these cases so far.

3. Kamala Mills Fire: Hotelier Held for Sheltering ‘1 Above’ Pub Owners

A hotelier was arrested, on Tuesday, for allegedly sheltering at his suburban residence in Juhu three owners of the '1 Above' pub wanted in connection with the Kamala Mills fire that claimed 14 lives, last month, police said.

Two weeks after the fire tragedy, the pub owners – Hitesh Sanghvi, Jigar Sanghvi and Abhijeet Mankar – continue to evade arrest despite the police widening its dragnet and issuing lookout notices for them.

Police on 1 January had arrested Sanghvi brothers' uncle Rakesh Sanghvi and cousin Aditya Sanghvi, both residents of Mazgaon in south Mumbai, for allegedly sheltering them. The duo were later released on bail by a local court.

Police, on Tuesday, arrested Vishal Kariya, who owns hotels and pubs in the city, after questioning him in connection with the whereabouts of the trio.

4. 2 Lalu Aides Got Arrested to Serve Him in Jail, Claim Cops

Two aides of former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad have been lodged in Ranchi's Birsa Munda Central Jail after they surrendered in an allegedly false case on the same day their boss was convicted of corruption and sent to prison, police said on Tuesday.

Sources said the two plotted to "land in trouble", get themselves incarcerated in the same prison as Lalu, and serve him there. Madan Yadav, an entrepreneur who owns two cowsheds, a big house and a high-end SUV, is in jail on charges of snatching Rs 10,000 from Sumit Yadav, a Ranchi resident.

He was allegedly helped by his friend Laxman Yadav, who too is in the same jail. Interestingly, the RJD, while refuting that Laxman and Madan were Lalu aides, admitted both are RJD workers.

5. Ex-Armyman Who Killed 6 People Released from Hospital, in Custody

Naresh Dhankar, the 39-year-old offender in the gruesome serial killing of six people including a pregnant woman, was arrested on Tuesday after his release from Safdarjung Hospital. He is being interrogated to establish the sequence of events and the situation that led him to attack the victims.

Dhankar told the Special investigating Team from Palwal that he could not control his anger after being "mistreated by his wife and in-laws". Earlier this week, a police team had visited his apartment at Omaxe City in Palwal to locate his mobile phone and scan the texts and calls made before the murderous spree. Prescriptions and medicine samples were also found at the house.

6. Manjula Shetye Death: Govt Gives Sanction to Prosecute 6 Jail Officials

The Maharashtra government has given the Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch sanction to prosecute six jail guards who allegedly murdered Byculla women’s prison inmate Manjula Shetye.

In order to prosecute a public servant, a prior sanction is required from the state. Shetye, an inmate at the Byculla women jail, was allegedly beaten to death at the prison by six guards, including the jailor, on 23 June, last year.

7. Indrani Called Peter from Spot Where Sheena's Body Was Dumped: Former Driver

Indrani Mukerjea’s former driver Shyamwar Rai told a Mumbai court on Tuesday that the ex-media tycoon had called her now-estranged husband, Peter, from the spot where her daughter Sheena Bora’s body was eventually dumped.

Supporting the CBI’s claim that Peter, too, was involved in the murder of his stepdaughter, Rai alleged Indrani drove to a forested area in Pen in Raigad, 60km from Mumbai, on April 23, 2012, a day before Bora’s murder, to check the spot where the body was to be disposed of. Rai, who has confessed to his role in the murder, has turned approver.

“Indrani spoke to Peter twice, once at the spot and once before that,” he told court. She told him “good work”, a reference to the choice of spot.

8. Delhi: Man Befriends Minor, Offers Car Ride, 'Rapes' Her in Shahdara Flat

A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl at his friend’s flat in east Delhi’s Shahdara after befriending her and taking her for a ride in his car from outside Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in central Delhi, police said.

The crime took place on Friday and the girl reported about the crime on Sunday. Police have also arrested the man’s cousin.

BK Singh, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi), said the girl had fled from her Ashok Vihar home few days ago and was staying at the gurdwara. Her parents had not filed a missing complaint as this was the third time in the past few months that she had fled. “Her family members had filed two kidnapping cases when she left her home in the past,” said Singh.

9. Dalit Woman Raped and Killed

A 34-year-old dalit woman was killed after she was allegedly raped at Dighi Purvi village under Sadar police station of Bihar's Vaishali district, on Tuesday.

Sadar police station SHO Chitaranjan Thakur said that the deceased's husband Ramayan Das has lodged an FIR of rape-cum-murder with the police station.

The incident occurred when the deceased had gone to attend call of nature in the morning, the SHO said adding that the family members started searching for her when she did not return home for long.
