1. Hyderabad Dalit Student’s Death: Minister, Varsity Vice Chancellor Named in FIR
Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and Hyderabad University Vice Chancellor Appa Rao have been named in a First Information Report over the alleged suicide of a Dalit research scholar at the university.
Protests erupted following Rohith Vemula’s death. Rohith was one of the five research scholars suspended by the university in August last year and an accused in the case of assault on a student leader. The five students were also kept out of the hostel.
Protesters allege that Rohith was driven to kill himself due to discrimination of Dalit students at the behest of Dattatreya.

2. Transit Remand for Witness in Kolkata Hit-and-Run Case
A Delhi court granted transit remand to a West Bengal resident who is a key witness in the hit-and-run case that claimed the life of an IAF drill instructor during Republic Day rehearsals in Kolkata.
The witness, 24-year-old Shahnawaz Khan, was arrested in New Delhi on Monday and was later sent to two-day transit remand by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pooran Chand after the Kolkata police sought his custody for interrogation, the Hindustan Times reports.

3. Two Travel Agents Held in Connection With Deaths of 21 Punjabi Youths
The Kapurthala police arrested two unauthorised travel agents in connection with the drowning of at least 21 Punjabi youths travelling in a boat to the US from Panama, reports The Tribune. The two agents were booked under the Immigration Act.
The police say only one person on the boat survived the mishap.
The police are also on the lookout for a third agent believed to be involved in the case.

4. Actor Nawazuddin’s Wife Files Counter-Case Against Five
Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife lodged a counter FIR against five fellow residents of a housing society in Mumbai for allegedly rioting and threatening her after Siddiqui was booked on charges of assaulting and misbehaving with a woman over a parking row in the complex.
The complaint by Siddiqui’s wife, Aaliya, was lodged last night with the Versova police against five persons of the housing society, including the original complainant, Hina Sheikh, hours after she named the actor in an FIR alleging assault.

5. Kejriwal’s Ink Attacker Sent to Police Custody For a Day
A Delhi court remanded Bhavna Arora, accused of throwing ink at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at a rally on Sunday, to police custody for a day.
The police said they want to question her to “verify her antecedents”,The Indian Express reports.
Arora has been booked on two counts for allegedly obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duty. Her counsel, however, maintains that she has been “falsely implicated in the case.”

6. Two Arrested For Raping Sikkim Woman For a Year
A 21-year-old woman from Sikkim was allegedly raped by the owner and an employee of the NGO she was working at for nearly a year. The accused have been arrested.
The case came to light after the woman approached the Delhi Commission for Women and lodged a complaint at the Hauz Khas police station, The Times of India reports.
The woman said the assailants raped her on several occasions, even recorded the act and threatening to upload it on social media if she reported it to anyone.
The owner has admitted to having committed the crime, according to the police. A case of rape has been registered against him and he has been sent to a 14-day judicial custody.

7. Nepalese Domestic Help Kills Self After Alleged Abuse
A Nepalese domestic help, employed by a businessman, allegedly committed suicide after being beaten up by a Supreme Court lawyer in Gurgaon, police said on Monday.
The victim has been identified as Keshav Gamal, 21, who worked under businessman Deepak Malhotra. The incident occurred on Sunday when Gamal was reversing Malhotra’s car and allegedly broke the lawyer’s flower pots, following which he was allegedly beaten by a stick by the angered neighbour.
A case of abetment to suicide against the accused has been registered against the lawyer. He is absconding and a manhunt is on to nab him, said the police.

8. Jiah Khan Murder: Women’s Court Pulls Up Prosecution
A special women’s court in Mumbai will start hearing arguments from February 12 on the framing of charges against Bollywood actor Suraj Pancholi who has been accused of abetting the suicide of model-actor Jiah Khan, reports the Mumbai Mirror.
On January 18, when the special public prosecutor Dinesh Tiwari sought time to go through the chargesheet, the judge reprimanded him and said that he was prolonging the case.

9. Police Nab Two Al-Qaeda Operatives From Haryana
Two men, suspected to have links with terror group al-Qaeda, have been arrested from Haryana’s Mewat district in a joint operation by the Delhi Police and the Intelligence Bureau.
The suspected terrorists have been identified as Mohamad Qasim and Abdul Sami, residents of Jamshedpur district in Jharkhand.
Sami is believed to allegedly have received arms training in Pakistan.
