2. We Said We Were Dalit, He Said What Can Dalits Do to Us: Gang Rape Victim

Nearly one month after a 19-year-old was gangraped by five men in Alwar, while she was on her way to the market along with her husband to purchase clothes for a wedding, she says she is still struggling to cope with the trauma, and finds it “very difficult to sleep” at night.

“I was finding it difficult to even get out of bed at one point because I could not stop thinking about what had happened. It kept replaying in my mind, but I have forced myself to get back some sense of normalcy now,” she told The Indian Express.

“Even then, when I lie down to sleep at night, the entire incident comes back to me, and it becomes very difficult to sleep… I want those men to hang, not just because of what they did to me but because I want to ensure that no other woman has to ever go through this again,” she says.

With exit polls predicting a clear victory for the Modi-led NDA government in the Lok Sabha elections, stock markets Monday, 20 May witnessed an unprecedented rally that sent the benchmark Sensex soaring 1,421.9 points to close at a record high of 39,352.67. The NSE Nifty Index surged over 421 points to post its best single day gain in over 10 years as investors started to move, perceiving the end of uncertainty over the debate on political stability and policy continuity.

Even as the 30-share Sensex registered its biggest one-day rise in the last six years, investor wealth, or the market capitalisation of listed companies, jumped by over Rs 533,000 crore to Rs 151,86,312 crore. The rupee also gained 49 paise — also the biggest single-day gain in two months — to close at 69.74 against the US dollar following sharp gains in the equity market and foreign capital inflows.

4. Exit-poll High: BJP Asks for House Session in MP to Turn Heat on Congress

A day after all exit polls predicted a BJP sweep in Madhya Pradesh, the party on Monday, 20 May asked the Governor to call a special session of the Assembly. In a letter to Governor Anandiben Patel, Leader of Opposition Gopal Bhargava asked her to direct Chief Minister Kamal Nath to call a special session to discuss important issues, which, he said, the Congress government had failed to address.

He said the state was suffering from a serious shortage of drinking water and deteriorating law and order situation. Just a day after the last phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday, 20 May expelled Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) leader Om Prakash Rajbhar from his cabinet.

Yogi wrote to governor Ram Naik requesting him to immediately dismiss Rajbhar from the post of backward class welfare and divyangjan empowerment minister. Naik accepted the recommendation and relieved Rajbhar with immediate effect.

Rajbhar had been on a collision course with BJP and was often critical of the party and Yogi government in public and the media. On 13 April, he tendered his resignation from the cabinet after he was asked to contest the Lok Sabha election from Ghosi parliamentary seat on a BJP ticket. After turning down the offer, he had declared that SBSP would contest 39 seats in eastern UP, but later announced candidates from 21 constituencies, including PM Narendra Modi’s turf Varanasi, and CM Yogi’s backyard, Gorakhpur. BJP treaded cautiously in taking action against the SBSP chief and no decision was taken on his resignation letter.

6. LS Elections Come to End, and NaMo TV Goes Off Air

With the end of Lok Sabha elections, the controversial NaMo TV has disappeared from all direct to home (DTH) platforms as suddenly as it made an appearance.

The channel, which had been in existence on YouTube for over a year, faced allegations of poll code violation after it surfaced on various DTH platforms just before the start of Lok Sabha elections on 31 May.

Referring to it as the ‘propaganda machine’ of PM Narendra Modi, opposition parties had alleged the channel violated the model code of conduct because it ran content relating to Modi’s interviews, rallies and speeches.

Election commissioner Ashok Lavasa, who did not agree with the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decisions to clear Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah of charges of violating the so-called Model Code of Conduct (MCC), broke his silence in an interview with Hindustan Times and said he has no axe to grind.

“I have no axe to grind. My concern is to have a system of disposal of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation cases in a timebound, transparent, and non-discriminatory manner,” Lavasa said ahead of an important election commission meeting on Tuesday.

The rift within the threemember commission came into the open after this paper reported on May 18 that Lavasa recused himself from all meetings to discuss MCC issues.

9. Cop Dies Minutes After Assault on Road

A sub-inspector in the Delhi Police died after he was allegedly assaulted on a street near his house in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar Sunday, 19 May night by a man who is involved in at least 21 cases of robbery, assault and stalking, police said Monday.

Though the 58-year-old policeman, identified as Raj Kumar, a cardiac patient, collapsed while riding a scooter about 30 minutes after the alleged assault by his neighbour Vijay Bhuri, police suspect that his death is linked to the incident. Bhuri has been charged with murder and arrested.

Bhuri was apparently angry because he believed the sub-inspector had shot a video which may have implicated him for bootlegging, police maintained.

According to Kumar’s family, he left his house in Vivek Vihar’s Kasturba Nagar around 9pm for an after-dinner stroll. Dr LK Verma, a physician who runs a clinic near the sub-inspector’s house, said Kumar came to his clinic, where they were sitting and discussing the national elections.
