1. Telgi, Stamp Paper Scam Kingpin, Critical in Hospital

Abdul Karim Telgi, the kingpin of the multi-crore stamp paper scam, was admitted to Victoria Hospital on Thursday. He has suffered multi-organ failure, and his condition is serious, prison officials and doctors said.

Telgi has spent 16 years in jail. In July, the High Court acquitted him in one of the three cases in which he was convicted.

He has not been able to stand for four years. The prison authorities at Parappana Agrahara have allowed him a wheelchair. He is now on a ventilator. Telgi was convicted in 2006 along with many of his associates for printing fake stamp papers. The scandal had rocked the state in early 2000.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is under some pressure now after the main accused in the multi-crore Dreams Infra realty scam, Sachin Naik, has gone underground a few days after he was released on bail on 5 September. Violating his bail condition that required him to report to the investigation officer every Tuesday and Friday, Naik is neither at home nor reachable otherwise. Essentially, nobody knows where he is.

The CID has officially made a submission before the first Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on 19 October, requesting the cancellation of his bail, citing the above reasons.

Naik, along with his partner Disha Choudhury, and later Mandeep Kaur, is accused of duping at least 2,500 customers through multiple realty ventures including, Dreamz Infra, TGS Real Estate and Gruha Kalyan Properties.

BBMP has promised that there won’t be a single pothole on city roads by 25 October After missing several self-imposed deadlines and later the Chief Minister’s date, BBMP has now faced the ire of Lokayukta.

On Monday, BBMP has vowed before Lokayukta that all potholes would be fixed by Wednesday. On Monday, it looked like the entire BBMP brass moved to Lokayukta office as around 56 top officials — from the commissioner to the assistant executive engineers — to give a status report on potholes in the city.

Lokayukta Justice Vishwanath P Shetty had taken up a suo motu case against BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad for the civic agency’s complete failure to address the pothole issue.

4. 20% of Parking Space on 85 Roads Could Be Reserved for Women

Twenty percent of the parking space on 85 roads in the city could be reserved for women. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has already announced the scheme for Church Street.

Mayor R Sampath Raj said the proposal to bring more under roads under the scheme was aimed at ensuring the safety of women.

A BBMP council meeting in 2013 had decided to monetise the parking system. But the civic body to failed to attract bidders in 2014-2015. It invited tenders a third time recently. Central Parking Services, a Bengaluru-headquartered parking management firm, has won the contract. The firm is already managing the parking in Pune and Indore, a senior official in the BBMP said. The company will pay Rs 31.5 crore to the BBMP. Around 85 roads have been identified for the smart parking facility.

5. Rs 12 Crore Nicked From JPMorgan, 2 Held

After a 10-day manhunt, luck ran out for 22-year-old Maruti alias Ramesh Chengappa just when he was beginning to enjoy the evening sea breeze at Marina Beach on Saturday. A team of city police nabbed the SSLC dropout, who had used fake documents and managed to get himself placed in the city-based firm that was handling accounting operations of international bankers JP Morgan group.

He is accused of having diverted Rs 12.15 crore with the help of a colleague, Suresh Babu. The police also recovered Rs 8.14 crore parked in a private bank account that was opened using fake documents. They also found three-acre land in Doddaballapura, a multi-storey building in Kothanur and gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 31 lakh purchased with the loot.

Concerned over the growing number of 'selfie deaths', the Karnataka government has decided to launch an online campaign warning that "self-photography could cost you your life" and urge people to take a pledge to take selfies responsibly.

The state tourism department will simultaneously launch a statewide drive to identify dangerous spots and demarcate 'Selfie Danger Zones' at all major tourist places, to prevent fatalities. "Our campaign will appeal to tourists to use their smartphones smartly. We are in the process of developing online videos, pictures, posters, leaflets and caution boards to create awareness on the hazards of taking selfies at risky locations, like waterfalls, cliffs, wildlife and vehicles," said tourism minister Priyank Kharge.
