1. Heavy Rains Lash City Again; Throw Normal Life out of Gear

As reported by Bangalore Mirror earlier, the city on Thursday witnessed heavy rain, paralyzing life in most parts. The unexpected rain that started pouring around noon continued to lash heavily till 3.30, leaving the public struggling to move to their destinations.

Areas such as Basaveshwara Nagar, BTM Layout, Shanthinagar and Banaswadi were hit by the rain, making vehicle movement difficult as roads were flooded. In Banaswadi, a tree fell due to heavy rain. A road was blocked near Vasanth Nagar after a tree branch fell.

Shanthinagar, the worst rain-hit area of the city this year, continued to suffer from three hours of flooding. Shanthinagar main road was flooded by up to two-feet of water.

The western parts of the city such as Basaveshwaranagar too witnessed water logging on roads, paralysing vehicular movement for at least two hours. Richmond road and places near Kanteerava stadium witnessed people running for shelter by covering themselves with whatever they could find.

2. Gauri Lankesh Honoured With Anna Politkovskaya Award

Slain journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has been posthumously honoured with the Anna Politkovskaya Award for her fight for human rights and women's issues.

The news of the international honour being conferred on Gauri reached her bereaved family a couple of days ago, her brother Indrajit Lankesh told mediapersons.

Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who wrote extensively against corruption in state firms and civilian suffering during the war in Chechnya was shot dead in Moscow on 7 October 2007. Reach All Women in WAR, which aims to support women human rights defenders working in countries in war and conflict, instituted the award in Anna's name.

3. Foreigner Arrested for Nationwide Kidney Racket

A 32-year-old suspected to be from Nigeria has been arrested by the Kolkata police from his rented house in Kothanur area on Thursday.

The foreigner is alleged to have been cheating patients looking for kidneys. He is said to have cheated victims to the tune of Rs 3 crore. The accused would create fake hospital websites claiming to be from the management and would advertise it on social media. The Kolkata police have taken the suspect back to West Bengal following a complaint registered there.

The accused has been identified as David Uzma Ubha. He was arrested by the Kolkata police on Tuesday and was produced before a local court on Nrupathunga Road on Wednesday before being taken to Kolkata.

4. Geethavishnu Gets Bail, Told to Cooperate

A day after he surrendered before Central Crime Branch at a guesthouse in Madikeri, about 250km from here, first additional chief metropolitan magistrate court granted bail to Geethavishnu S, grandson of former MP and industrialist late Audikeshavalu Naidu. Geethavishnu was directed by the court to cooperate with the investigation.

Bengaluru police detained the 27-year-old on the night of 28 September after his Mercedes Benz allegedly rammed a Maruti Omni near South End Circle, Jayanagar, and recovered 110g of ganja from the vehicle. In the night, Vishnu was shifted to Mallya Hospital and he escaped from there.

5. Namma Metro Staffer Commits Suicide Alleging Harassment

A 30-year-old Namma Metro staffer committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in BMRCL quarters in Sunkadakatte on Thursday.

The deceased, Santosh Kumar, was an engineering and maintenance staffer of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), the police said. Kumar was found hanging in his room by his mother Pushpa when she went to wake him up in the morning. The police suspect he could have hanged himself the previous night. His body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem.

Kumar left a suicide note in which he says he was a victim of mental harassment, but the police are unsure if the harassment was related to his personal life or by BMRCL management.

Meanwhile, the BMRCL Employees Union alleged that workplace harassment led him to take the extreme step.

6. Yathindra Will Contest If High Command Agrees: CM

With approximately six months to go for the 2018 assembly elections, chief minister Siddaramaiah said his second son Dr Yathindra is almost certain to enter the poll fray.

Yathindra, who was virtually pushed into politics after his brother Rakesh's untimely death, has got political visibility over the past one year, leading to speculations that he will continue the Siddaramaiah lineage in the political arena.

During a candid interaction on Thursday with the reporters of Vijaya Karnataka, a sister publication of The Times of India, Siddaramaiah said: "After the death of my elder son Rakesh, who was politically active in Varuna, my wife and I virtually had to push Yathindra into taking care of the constituency. Being a doctor by profession, he was initially hesitant, but has now developed an eye for politics. I have already announced that I will contest from Chamundeshwari constituency, which has elected me to power five times. If the high command agrees, he (Yathindra) will contest."
